Semax and Selank: nootropic peptides in cognitive research

Semax is a synthetic analog of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) fragment 4-10. Developed in Russia and approved there for clinical use, it has been studied for its effects on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression, cognitive function, and neuroprotection.

Selank is a synthetic analog of the naturally occurring immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin. It has been studied for its anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties, which appear to operate through modulation of GABA neurotransmission rather than through benzodiazepine-like mechanisms.

The key difference between the two is their primary target. Semax research focuses on cognitive enhancement and neuroprotection via BDNF pathways. Selank research focuses on stress reduction and immune modulation via GABA and interleukin pathways.

Both peptides are typically administered intranasally in research settings, though injectable forms are also available. They are supplied as lyophilized powders and reconstituted before use.

These peptides are sold exclusively for laboratory research. Clinical approval in Russia does not constitute approval in other jurisdictions.
